Curriculum

Academic Goals

Medical Science aims to protect humans from diseases, and support well-being of human life. To accomplish this goal, medical science broadly covers basic and applied researches to understand mysteries of pathogenesis and to find novel ways for preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic methods. Especially, biomedical science is typical fusion-science, composed of many disciplines in biology, pharmacology, physics, chemistry, engineering , and social sciences. The importance of medical science is increasing with social demands. Accordingly needs for experts are expanding, and specialized training system is becoming necessary fortraining world leaders of Biomedical fields.
The mission of the Department of Biomedical Sciences in Korea University Graduate Program is to raise future leaders of biomedical researches through providing students state-of-art knowledges of biomedical science and supporting their independent research activities.

Fields of Study

Course of Biomedical Science is comprised of two departments as follows:

  • Biomedical Science
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Medical Bio Convergence

Degree Requirements

  • Students who are enrolled in master's degree program must receive a total of 24 "course work" credits or more, including 6 credits for core subjects, more than 6 credits for major subjects, more than 6 credits for elective subjects, and 6 credits for BM biomedical seminars.
  • Students who are enrolled in doctoral degree program must receive a total of 36 "course work" credits or more, including 9 credits for core subjects, at least 9 credits for major subjects, at least 9 credits for elective subjects, 3 credits for BM foundation of biomedical research, and 6 credits for biomedical seminars. The subjects completed during master's degree program should be excluded. There is no discrimination between master's degree and doctoral degree programs in terms of subjects
  • Students who enrolled in integrated master's and doctoral degree program must receive a total of 54 "course work" credits or more, including 12 credits for core subjets, at least 15 credits for major subjets, at least 15 credits for elective shbjets, 3 credits for BM foundation of biomedical research, and 9 credits for biomedical seminars.
  • Students in any of the three programs listed above are allowed to obtain 3 credits at maximum per semester from other graduate programs in Korea University and those credits will be included as ones for elective subjects.

Comprehensive Examinations

  • Master's degree program in the Department of Biomedical Sciences: Students are examined on 1 core and 1 major subjects.
  • Doctoral degree program in the Department of Biomedical Sciences: Students are examined on 1 major and 1 elective subjects.
  • Integrated master's and doctoral degree program in the Department of Biomedical Sciences :
    Students are examined on 1 major and 1 elective subjects.
