Korea University College of Medicine started opening the venue for academic research and information exchanges starting from this year by creating ‘KU Medicine Special Lecture Series’ and inviting prestigious scholars from world’s renowned universities and research institutes as a speaker.
The first series was a special lecture given by Professor Jae Ung Jung, who is a world’s renowned medical scientist in tumor virology and currently serves as the professor, Chair of the Department of Molecular Microbiology & Immunology and director at the Institute of Emerging Pathogens at University of Southern California KECK School of Medicine on Apr. 21. The lecture was provided under the theme of ‘Immunopathogenesis induced by Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome Virus’ and professor Jung explained the current state and future direction of the research as one of the most prestigious researcher in the area. He also added that he conducts a research assuming unlimited possibilities of unexplored world by keeping in mind the phrase ‘To Infinity and Beyond’.
The second series was given by Director Robert A. Star of the National Institute if Health under the theme of ‘A few journeys to Acute Kidney Injury and Chronic Kidney Disease’ on May 22. Director Robert A. Star said that acute kidney injury and chronic kidney diseases are still representative diseases from which people suffer mostly even though many trials are made to find new treatments. He said that many drugs fail to pass clinical tests even though they pass animal trial. He said that the most effective treatment, in his thinking, is a better understanding pathophysiology and early discovery and introduced many examples of studies which are being underway.
For the third series, Secretary General John Clemens of the International Center for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICCDDR, B), a world-class research institute for infectious diseases, was invited on May 26 to provide a lecture under the theme of ‘Population Level Effects of Vaccines with Special Emphasis on Vaccine Herd Protection’. Secretary General John Clemens, who was hired as the first foreign visiting professor last November by Korea University College of Medicine is a world’s renowned scholar in the field of infectious diseases and vaccination and delivered a high-quality lecture on the effectiveness and role of vaccine’s herd immunity defense and knowledge about the latest researches.
Korea University College of Medicine plans to hold a number of lectures to make students have a global mindset and share the latest medical knowledge and experience.
A New Guideline for Patients with In-stent Restenosis
Professor Do-Sun Lim of Department of Internal Medicine (Department of Cardiology, Korea University Anam Hospital) grabs the attention with the announcement on the research related to effective treatment of in-stent restenosis which may occur after the stent deployment into patients with ischemic heart disease.
Currently, coronary artery stent deployment is best option for the treatment of patients with myocardial infarction and angina pectoris. Therefore, various kinds of drug-eluting stents have been developed and widely used in hospitals.
However, there are many cases who develop in-stent restenosis after stent ideployment and in-stent restenosis has a significant impact on the treatment and prognosis. In-stent restenosis cases which are caused after the first generation drug-eluting stent ideployment are treated with the second generation stent. Therefore, patients with in-stent restenosis are keenly interested in the decision on the use of proper stent.
The research is very meaningful in that it is a perspective study conducted by many domestic institutions.
The research team applied everfolimus eluting stent (ESS) and zotarolimus eluting stent (ZES), which are the most recently developed second generation drug eluting stents to patients with in-stent restenosis after the first treatment. Then researchers compared and analyzed the the results of angiography and intravascular ultrasound for 9 months and ratio of clinical events for 3 years.
The result showed that the late loss was 0.40mm for EES and 0.45mm for ZES respectively based on angiography, neointimal hyperplasia is 0.51mm3/mm for EES and 0.56mm3/mm for ZES after 9 months and incidence of cardiovascular clinical event for 3 years is 15.8% for EES and 22.6% for ZES, indicating no statistically significant difference between the two methods.
This is the first research on the direct comparison between two second generation drug eluting stents, which are developed most recently, for the treatment of in-tent-restenosis after drug eluting stent ideployment, which may be an important basis for presenting treatment guidelines for such patients.
The research outcome was published in <EUROPEAN HEART JOURNAL> under the title of ‘Prospective randomized comparison of clinical and angiographic outcomes between everolimus-eluting vs. zotarolimus-eluting stents for treatment of coronary restenosis in drug-eluting stents: intravascular ultrasound volumetric analysis (RESTENT-ISR trial)’ last year.

'The 2nd KUMC-Medical Career Navigation Fair' Successfully Completed
Korea University College of Medicine successfully held the Second KUMC-Medical Career Navigation Fair on May 27, 2017 successfully. The popularity of the fair was demonstrated by the fact that about 600 medical school students, parents and high school students visited Korea University College of Medicine despite the event was held during the weekend.
The medical sector is changing very rapidly with customized medicine and artificial intelligence in the flow of the 4th industrial revolution. Accordingly, the paradigm of medical education has changed into nurturing creative medical talents. In line with these changes, Korea University College of Medicine held the second Medical Career Navigation Fair following the last year in an aim to help individual students select majors and jobs suitable for them by providing correct information to students, who are future doctors, and providing vivid experience and in-depth counseling.
A sophomore student of a college of medicine said the reason for his participation saying that “I wanted to draw a big picture of the medical sector, which is hard to see while I take classes. It is good to have an opportunity to learn more about things, which are not covered by regular classroom course”.
“Specialty-Specific Presentations” on the basics, characteristics and prospects of specialties were held in three different large seminar room after an opening remark. Students who were with their family looked through the leaflet to identify which presentation he would attend and which experience booth he would visit. Some of them were mesmerized by eye-catching various experience booths that were located outside of the YooKwangSa Hall where opening ceremony was held. A man who dressed like a ghost and induced people to visit the booth of forensic medicine grabbed the attention of all visitors.
A professor who led the counseling and experience zone of Digestive Internal Department which was crowded with visitors for during the event that lasted for about 7 hours said “I feel happy as students seem to enjoy the process of finding their career through this experience even though they do not have deep level of knowledge about our department. I think it is important to look around various departments and learn relevant knowledge as students do not know well about specialties even when they need to choose them”. “I hope that this event will serve as an opportunity for them to find out what they want and I think this kind of event is very good from the perspective of a professor”, he added.
Students could enjoy unique exhibitions held at the specialty level and receive one-to-one counseling from professors of specific field. “Specialty specific counseling and experience zone” where various programs such as exhibitions and experiences were organized was arranged. Department of Pediatrics made people have interest in displayed items by exhibiting many items such as an incubator and the Department of Urology prepared equipment that is used for robot operation and provided an opportunity for the visitors to experience it through simple games. Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology prepared a dummy body model to make a professor and students experience the process of delivery. Department of Otorhinolaryngology checked years, throats and noses of students with endoscope and Department of Ophthalmology provided retina examination service. In addition, other events to see and experience such as showing how to anesthetize a model by Department of Anesthesiology and microsurgery experience that is provided by the Department of Plastic Surgery were prepared.
During the event, ceremony for the publication of <Guiding Light for Choosing Career for Medical School Students> which is helpful for future doctors select their specialties was held. The book, written by professors of each department working for Korea University College of Medicine was very popular among visitors to the Navigation Fair to the extent that parents and students were lined up to purchase the book. In addition, various programs such as special lectures by senior doctors who took the different path from being a medical doctor, booth for international exchanges where students can get the latest information on overseas clinical practice, booth to support the development of students as well as booth for training team of the KUMC were organized.
A parent whose family members participated the event said, “this event will be a very good opportunity not only for my first child who is a student of Korea University College of Medicine for him to choose his specialty but also for my second child who wants to enter the college of medicine”. She also added that “I want such a great event continue in the future”.
A high school student participating in the event said “surgery and treatment are the only words I can come up with when I think about the job of a doctor. Through this event, I could learn more exact and specific information on medical school”. He expressed his big aspiration saying, “I want to enter Korea University College of Medicine and be a doctor who studies medical science”.
Dean Hong Sik Lee of Korea University College of Medicine said “we know that our students feel difficulties in selecting their major and they often regret and fear of their choice after selecting a major. That’s why we prepared this event to provide more exact information on different majors”. He also added, “I hope that our students can remove their concerns on the selection of their major and want them grow into doctors with a warm heart through this event where almost all of the elements of our hospital are incorporated”.
Microcontact Printing Technology Has Turned into Technology of Making
The research team processed the surface on which neurons are grown with microcontact printing technology, which is mainly used for semiconductor process. Neuronal processes grown on this modified surface are concentrated at a discrete region with neural synapses compartmentalized.
The technology makes it possible to control the process of making neural circuit precisely and observe the process easily. Therefore, this novel technology will be useful for drug screening or neuron chip design related to various neuron diseases which are caused by defects in neural circuit.
The research outcome was published in <BIOMATERIALS> with a title of ‘Synaptic compartmentalization by micropatterned masking of a surface adhesive cue in cultured neurons’ last year in recognition of its excellence.
